Periodontal Disease
We utilize the latest laser technology LANAP (Laser Assisted New Attachment Procedure) to gently zap gum disease. LANAP or laser periodontal surgery, unlike tradition oral surgery, is non-invasive. That means no surgical cutting and no surgical stitches. With LANAP, patients report less discomfort and a much shorter recovery time. Many patients even return to work the same day they have the procedure!
Oral surgery does not have to be a nightmare anymore. With the FDA approved LANAP procedure, treating your gum disease is not something to dread. Give us a call for a free consultation to see if you are a candidate for this procedure.

VELscope Oral Cancer Exam
Oral Cancer cases have increased by 11% in the U.S.(2007). Although tobacco and alcohol use have been well-known factors contributing to oral cancers, a connection to several Human Papilloma viruses has now been discovered . 25% of all oral cancer patients have had no previous history of smoking or other tobacco/alchohol related factors! When detected early, survival rates increase from 52% to 80-90%!
This FDA approved oral cancer examination system can help detect early oral cancer, before it may become visible to the natural eye. VELscope emits a safe blue light into the oral cavity, checking the deepest tissue layers underneath the surface, causing the tissue to fluoresce. The dentist or hygienist is then able to immediately view the different fluorescence responses to help differentiate between normal and abnormal tissue. Under examination with the VELscope® System, abnormal tissue typically appears as an irregular, dark area that stands out against the otherwise normal, green fluorescence pattern of surrounding healthy tissue. Any areas of concern will then be followed up for re-evaluation and/or referral to an oral surgeon specialist.
Although this exam may not be covered by some insurance companies, it is strongly recommended as a screening for adults on an annual basis. This exam takes less than 5 minutes but , as part of our routine visual oral cancer exam, it could save a life!

Porcelain Veneers
A veneer, usually made from porcelain, is a thin, semi-translucent "shell," custom made to precisely fit over an existing tooth. The finished result is extremely strong and durable. They can be used for a variety of imperfections:
· closing spaces
· restoring chipped or broken teeth
· covering unsightly, stained or worn-out fillings
· whitening permanently stained or discolored teeth that are not candidates for teeth whitening
· correcting uneven or crooked teeth
Advantages and Benefits of Veneers
· Only a micro amount of natural tooth structure (if any) is removed during the procedure.
· A healthy, natural look is achieved with little or no discomfort.
· Veneers are often less expensive than alternative procedures.
· Veneers are strong, resist staining, and last for many years

Cosmetic Bonding and Fillings
A composite resin filling can be matched to the color of the natural tooth. It can be used when only a small amount of tooth structure needs replacing or repair. This type of treatment may require no or little use of the drill as Dr. Nelson uses the Waterlase laser instrument.

Porcelain Crowns and Onlays
A full is indicated when a tooth has had root canal treatment or when a substantial amount of the entire tooth structure (enamel or filling) has been lost. Teeth that have broken, large silver amalgam fillings require restoration with the strength of a crown or onlay. With proper care, crowns and onlays last for many years.
Where possible, an onlay is used as an exceptionally strong restoration, which is more conservative than a full crown, because it requires less removal of the natural tooth structure.
Porcelain Bridges (multiple crowns)
are another alternative for replacement of missing teeth. The anchor teeth are prepared and multiple crowns are specially fabricated as one unit to span the sites of missing teeth.
Veneers, crowns, and onlays can last for years, depending on how well you take care of them. Because veneers are stonger than simple bonding, and crowns and onlays are stronger than simple fillings, they are more resistant to staining and chipping. However, it is important to maintain excellent oral hygiene, to avoid bad habits such as biting on nails or chewing ice, and to
to visit regularly for your preventive dental care appointments. These precautions will help to ensure that your beautiful restorations will last a long time and will continue to look as good
as new.

Orthodontics
Imagine the look of smooth, perfectly aligned teeth, and a full smile. Orthodontics offers the permanent improvement of crowded, angled teeth and can create a fuller smile and lip appearance. Future dental problems can be prevented by making brushing and flossing of straight teeth easier.
Phase 1 Orthodontics - Through the use of orthodontic appliances for the teeth of pre-teens and teens, proper jaw and tooth development can be promoted, often decreasing the length of time in braces and preventing future misalignments of teeth.
Traditional and Porcelain Orthodontics - Both the traditional metal brackets and tooth-colored porcelain brackets are available for both children and adults. Porcelain brackets offer a barely-noticeable option.
Invisalign Orthodontic Aligners - Decreased treatment time (average cases are approximately 11-12 months compared to 2½ years with traditional brackets), and the virtual invisibility of the aligners make this a wonderful option for teens and adults who have all of their permanent teeth.
Endodontics
Dr. Nelson performs the majority of endodontic (Root canals) procedures in his office. When necessary, a referral to a specialist will be given. With the use of high tech instruments and improved treatments, dental care is much more comfortable.
